Meet SMH Photography

“We are Steve and Sandra, very happily married who both love everything about weddings and about photography. We have photographed over 500+ weddings and have been professional photographers for over 11 years. We absolutely love what we do and are extremely passionate about wedding photography. We both love to have fun and keep things really relaxed when photographing weddings; if everybody is having a great time then we are able to deliver the best photographs. Ultimately, we try to ensure that everybody is completely relaxed and happy and not worried about the camera.”

We asked them a little about their work and their experiences photographing countryside weddings at Heaton House Farm. We’ve also included some of their beautiful photographs for you to see!

How did you become wedding photographers in Cheshire and Staffordshire?

Even before we met we both loved photography and continued with this after we got together mainly as a hobby. We used to enjoy walking in the mountains capturing the sunrises and sunsets so initially our interests were in landscape photography – little did we know that this would come in handy for our wedding photography too.

A work colleague at the time who knew we were into photography and had seen some of our landscape images asked if we would photograph his wedding; we were a little apprehensive as it a lot of pressure to ensure everything goes well and deliver photographs from the most important day of his life. He loved the images from his wedding and then recommended us to another friend and so our story as wedding photographers began and SMH Photography was born.

We got recommendation after recommendation, and soon after – through hard work and determination to succeed – we gave up our day jobs and went full time! We’ve since built up our extremely successful wedding photography business that we are so passionate about and take great pride in.

What do you love most about being a wedding photographer?

Being able to capture a special time in someone’s life that they will be able to treasure forever.

We are so humbled to be able to do this and sadly this was brought home no more so than when tragedy struck soon after a wedding we photographed. We had taken the last images of a family member, and we had captured a lasting memory that we have been able to give back to that family.

Every wedding is special and we want to ensure we capture this in the most beautiful and natural way that will bring a smile to a couple’s face every time they look at their images.

Professionally, what is your proudest accomplishment as a wedding photographer?

We are proud to have won awards in the past but to be honest we feel really proud and humbled when we receive a ‘Thank You’ from our couples, after they have seen their wedding images, to tell us how they have loved reliving their wedding day, the laughter and tears that our images have brought to them. To be able to give someone a lifetime of memories is certainly our proudest accomplishment.

And how about before weddings – what was you first job as photographers?

One of our first paid photography assignments was to capture images for Bentley Motors – we are now proud to be one of the few approved professional photographers as used by Bentley Motors for commercial commissions.

Why should a couple choose you as a photographer for a wedding at Heaton House Farm?

We like to feel that we can always manage to create a fantastic image out of an impossible situation – weddings can be challenging at times and it’s really important to still be able to create something amazing for the bride & groom when or where they would least expect it.

What is the best thing about working at Heaton House Farm?

We love absolutely everything about Heaton House Farm including the stunning scenery. You know the minute you arrive that everything will run like clockwork and after photographing over 500+ weddings at different venues we now know that not all venues are created equal.

The team are extremely attentive to the couples’ needs and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. You feel like you are working with staff who have the same passion for each and every wedding as you do. We love the fact that there are lots of different options on where to hold the ceremony and also options for indoor photographs if the weather isn’t being kind. We love that when the wedding breakfast is over, the evening reception room is all ready to go and guests are not ushered into a small part of the venue while the room is turned around. Everything flows throughout the whole day. It really does feel like a family run business where everyone cares.

Do you have a top tip for couples looking for wedding photography in Staffordshire?

It’s never too early to book your photographer – good photographers can be booked a couple of years in advance.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourselves

Steve broke his back in 3 places and his pelvis in a motorbike accident and was on life support, he was told he would never walk again as a result….. but through hard work and determination, we were climbing mountains 12 months later!
