The Farm...
In the early 60's, Mick's Grandfather, Ralph Steele kept a flock
of around 60 Suffolk Sheep.
This ewe gave birth to quins and went on to rear them with a "little help
from Grandparents"
He also milked 32 dairy Shorthorn Cows and grew a variety of crops with the help of two Shire Horses called Captain and Major.
This picture shows Grandad Steele with "Captain" in the
shafts of his new Bamford hay tedder harnessed ready
for work in the early 50's.
The 165 acre farm is around 225 metres above sea level
and although mainly a grassland farm, does have some
cereal crops, an abundance of trees and woodland which
supports a diverse array of wildlife. The farm is managed
under the "Countryside Stewardship Scheme".
Until November 2003, Heaton House Farm, like many other holdings in this region, had been a Dairy Farm milking a herd of 110 Holstein Friesian cows.
A herd of Pedigree Belgian Blue Beef cattle was established in 1985 producing progeny which go into other herds as breeding stock.
We currently manage, along with the Pedigree Beef Cows, a small herd of cross-bred beef suckler cows, a flock of 120 Charolais cross Texel sheep, and some Free Range Hens which lay eggs for our B&B guests.
We crop a large proportion of our land to make Hay and Haylage for local livestock.
Our aim in the past has been to avoid using chemicals as far as possible with the intention of converting the farm to fully Organic production as soon as possible.
